Saving my sanity at the dinner table - surprise victory
It starts out the same way every time…
I arrive home after picking my two boys up from school, they drop off their things and rush upstairs to go play and I begin to wonder “What am I making for dinner?” Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like I don’t think about it until the last minute or anything, it’s that every meal is a potential landmine just waiting to be stepped on so in the end I haven’t made a decision until the last minute.
Tonight after scanning the pantry, fridge and both freezers I finally resigned myself to the imminent onslaught that was in store for me and I settled on:
Pigs in a blanket:
1 package Pillsbury Crescent Rolls
4 Ball Park Beef Franks cut in halves
8 thick slivers (can you do that?) of cheddar cheese
1 Package of BirdsEye Steamers (green beans) on the side.
By the way, for today’s dose of “you learn something new every day” when those steamer meals say cook for 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 min, it’s best to go with the low number. I didn’t have the bag explode as I did here, but I did end up piercing the bag in some fashion as it leaked when I took it out of the microwave…live and learn.
I set them on the table and told the kids they were having “Pigs in a blanket and tiny trees.” Immediately my eldest son asked me to confirm that we were not in fact having broccoli (a family favorite) and once a query is made regarding the meal it’s all over, somebody is gonna start complaining.
This time, however I was surprised and overjoyed to discover that the standard holdout in any meal, my darling 5 year old son, turned to his brother and said, “No these are green beans,” and then ate them! He then asked me for ketchup (something he’d only discovered a week earlier) for his “piggy”.
I can’t believe it, yet another meal I can add to the “Nobody is going to run screaming from the room” list. I wonder what will happen when he sees my culinary catastrophe later this week.
